Why Build a Website?

You are here: Home > Why Build a Website

I decided to build this site because... well, let's face it, everybody's doing it now. The "world wide web" ( or "world-wide-wait" as a lot of people are calling it ) has millions and millions of pages of information. Some of it is very, very good. Sadly, for every good page you find, there are likely to be thousands of rubbish ones to trawl through first.

I decided that if it was as easy to build a site as everyone was saying then I should at least give it a try. Once people found out I worked with computers, I had a number of requests to build them a web site. It started to become embarrassing having to turn them away all the time. I had to do something about it...

I knew what HTML was but I hadn't a clue about how to write .html files. However, there are a number of applications that will convert the content of a file into HTML so getting a couple of pages up and running in the short term wouldn't be too much of a problem. I bought a book called The Idiot's Guide to Creating a Web Page which is excellent. It became my bible and is still a fantastic reference book. Later on when I wanted to do some dynamic web pages, I bought Active Server Pages for Dummies.

The next hurdle I encountered was what to put on those pages. Now I know why there are so many crap web sites out there. Deciding what to put up there is REALLY difficult; at least it was for me. What may start out as a good idea for content can turn into a nasty monster once the details have been worked out.

I am taking the approach that I'm going to write about what I know. If anyone disagrees with the content, they can me to tell me so. I can then correct the error or give some justification for what I've said.
