Wastwater is the deepest lake in England at 79 metres or 259 feet. It is located in the Wasdale Valley at coordinates 54°26'30 N, 3°17'30W. It is 3 miles long and half a mile wide at the widest point.
On the north-western side are the cliffs of Buckbarrow (a part of Seatallan) and the upturned-boat shape of Yewbarrow.
Under licence, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) can extract a maximum of 18,184.4 m3 a day (over 4 million gallons) or 6,637,306 m3 a year from Wastwater to use at Sellafield.
