Buttermere, at co-ordinates 54°32'N 3°16'W, is 2 kilometres long by 400 metres wide (or 1.25 miles by 0.25 miles) and 23 metres (or 75 feet) deep. Surrounded by fells, it is at the head of the river Cocker. A well-worn path around the lake is 4.5 miles.
The village of Buttermere, meaning "lake by the dairy pastures", lies to the northwest between the lake and its sibling, Crummock Water. The village centres around the Bridge Hotel and a busy car park operated by the National Trust which owns the entire area.
