A curragh is type of boat with a wooden frame, over which canvas is stretched. In years gone by, animal skins or hides were more usual. Shapes and sizes vary by region but all bear a resemblance to the much smaller Welsh coracle.
Curraghs are used on lakes and rivers but are also used as sea-going vessels. It is feasible that Saint Brendan made the first transatlantic crossing in a curragh in the 6th century. Tim Severin proved it was possible in 1978 by sailing a leather curragh to Newfoundland.
